Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wolcott District Curriculum

The Connecticut Common Core State Standards focuses on increasing the rigor across all subjects from English to math to science. In English, the standards focus on literacy not only in literature but across all subjects as well as current events. In Mathematics, fewer topics are covered to provide a more in depth and deeper understanding of the subject material. The Science curriculum includes goals to increase the literacy of students so they can read and analyze scientific material and form rational conclusions.

At the middle and high school level students are divided into academic teams in each of the core content areas of Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. The teams are uniquely focused for the optimal student learning and engagement. Honors and advanced classes are offered for gifted students and there is a focus on differentiation in all lessons. Each grade level incorporates lesson that bring together several different content areas. This method allows the students to reach a more in depth understanding at many different levels.

Chalk Talk: Kindergarten Readiness

Whether it’s your first child or your fourth, sending your little one off to kindergarten is a stressful but exciting time for most parents. Many parents wonder whether or not their tot is ready for the rigors of full time school. Preschools can greatly increase a child’s readiness and provide a beginning lesson in classroom behavior. Making sure your child knows shapes and basic colors, can sit still for a short period of time and follow basic instructions are important milestones your little one needs to reach before the big day. Reading, reading, and more reading all kinds of books is the single best thing any parent can do. It enriches their vocabulary, teaches all kinds of lessons, and even helps show them how to sit still and listen for short periods of time. In addition, it creates bonding and lifetime love of reading and learning. Getting ready for school doesn’t have to all flashcards and drilling site words, just make it fun and your child will learn.
