Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodland Park District Curriculum

The districts’ curricula are also aligned to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards. By developing learning opportunities that meet or exceed these standards, the Woodland Park and Passaic districts ensure all students receive a comprehensive education that is both challenging and relevant. As such, upon their graduation from high school students have all the necessary knowledge and skills for college.

As part of the language arts curriculum, students acquire valuable skills to effectively read informational texts. Students in elementary school learn how to identify key ideas and details by asking relevant questions about the passages they’ve read. They also acquire the ability to determine the meaning of words and phrases based on their context. Students in middle school examine persuasive texts and assess whether the author’s arguments are based on relevant evidence. They also analyze the structure of texts to determine if their organization adds to or distracts from their main point or argument.

Chalk Talk: FAFSA Tips

If you have a child heading off to college soon, it’s time to explore financial aid opportunities to help offset the costs of their college education. The first step is to fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used by colleges and universities to determine the amount of money you can contribute to your child’s educational expenses. These results can impact how much need-based aid your child qualifies to get, be it through grants, scholarships or work studies. Even if you think you make too much money to qualify for need-based aid, apply anyway. Even if you don’t currently qualify, circumstances may change and you may qualify in the future. Additionally, federal loans not based on need require the FAFSA anyway. Also be sure to fill out and submit the FAFSA early – many schools have deadlines in January and since many aid opportunities are on a first-come, first-served basis, the earlier you apply the better.
