Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Yorkville District Curriculum

Because the Common Core is internationally benchmarked, students will be well-prepared to explore post-secondary education and careers. In humanities classes, students learn to read for comprehension as well as synthesizing different ideas from multiple readings. Students write analytical essays, using a variety of resources and technology to gather information. Students are expected to be effective communicators, which means observing attentively, speaking and listening effectively, and writing clearly and expressively.

In math and science classes, students are taught to use critical and analytical thinking to solve problems. The focus is on essential concepts which are instilled in depth throughout the year, giving students a solid foundation with which to explore more complex ideas. By doing this, students develop logical and quantitative reasoning skills that they will use in problem-solving.

Chalk Talk: College Resumes

The purpose of a resume is to provide a 1-page, easily readable list of a student’s extra-curricular activities. Though resumes can have different formats, they should all include similar information. At the top, usually centered, students place their names, address, contact information, and grade point average. Below that, on the left-hand side, students should create four or five sections of activities. These can range from Leadership Activities to Work Experience to Volunteering or Community Service. Sports, Clubs, and even Travel Abroad are possible sections, but remember that the purpose of a resume isn’t to fill a page; it’s to make the student stand out. Therefore, everything included on the resume should demonstrate certain qualities of the student. Clubs are good because they demonstrate involvement, but clubs that have promoted community service, for example, are better, or being a leader or founder of a club are even better.
