EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

The core values that underpin my role as an educator are taking a holistic approach to education and attending to the whole child. I firmly believe that learning is not just about the academics or what the child cognitively learns. It is includes social and emotional development that comes from being in a educational environment, as well as physical development through physical education and fine motor activities. Learning is about creating and being part of a community so that students are able to learn from one another. They begin to realize the importance of interdependence and the emotional well-being of individuals and how much they can learn from their peers.
It is important as an educator to promote and encourage collaboration between the students. It requires students to develop the skills to problem solve by working together in a manner in which all team members are contributing equally according to their strength, which is a necessary life skill.

Lastly, motivation is a crucial core value. Learning occurs when students are motivated not by external motivations, such as grades, tests, and rewards. Instead, learning occurs when it stems from a true interest in what they are learning or from a need that they themselves have chosen as importance to address.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I have recently graduated with a Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University, with a focus in the primary/junior division. Prior to this I received my undergraduate degree in psychology, as well as a post-graduate degree in addictions counselling.
I have 4 years of experience working with youth in a school-based setting. I have volunteered in two schools working with adolescents and children with varying backgrounds and learning abilities. Since then, I have taken an AQ in Special Education and an ABQ in Family Studies(Intermediate).

Additionally, my previous experience volunteering in the credit recovery program with at-risk students, has given me both an appreciation and understanding of the trials and tribulations students have academically.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have experience tutoring students in a one-on-one environment.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

In my spare time, I volunteer my time at a local dance studio. During large recitals I help the staff and students with the organization of the event while being a one of the change room managers. In addition, I volunteer my time tutoring an elementary age students helping her with Math, Language and Reading.
