Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Portsmouth District Curriculum
In the Language Arts, students learn how to create and deliver arguments in a variety of mediums. Reading and writing fluency is expected, and students should be able to identify the various components of both fiction and nonfiction text. In elementary school, students will be asked to read a variety of informational and fictional texts, and will then be asked to show an understanding of the concepts presented. As students progress into secondary school they will be asked to understand more complex concepts, and to create original works of fiction and nonfiction. A strong grasp of grammar, sentence structure, and organization is expected in written work.
While progressing through the mathematics curriculum, students learn a variety of problem solving strategies. From basic arithmetic to advanced calculus, students are expected to show a thorough understanding of the concepts presented. Learning is scaffolded in such a way that each lesson builds on the previous one. Proficiency in statistics, probability, geometry, numerics, and algebra is expected.

- Power Standards - With the implementation of the Common Core Curriculum, the district has provided a link to the "Power Standards" central to the subjects of Math, Language Arts and Science. This resource is there to help parents understand what their kids are expected to know.

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!
We are so happy with the results of your tutoring program and academic support. Homework time was such a stressful evening for the entire evening before we brought your tutors into our home. Thank you for all your help!
Our daughter, a first grader, struggled with basic reading and handwriting. When she began with SchoolTutoring she was almost a year behind her class. Within a year of being enrolled, she is reading above her grade level and has the confidence to match.

Chalk Talk: Avoiding Fallacies: Non Sequitur
The term ‘non sequitur’ literally means “it does not follow,” and it occurs when someone making an argument includes a position that does not make sense in the context of the argument. For example, if someone states that arguing against a policy within the government means you are not patriotic, this is a non-sequitur. One does not have to blindly agree with every single thing a government does in order to support his or her country. It does not logically follow that patriotism is based on blind obedience and acceptance. Inserting a non sequitur into a persuasive argument can severely weaken the argument, if found. It takes away the overall credibility of the arguer and of his or her position.
