Oak Harbor District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Oak Harbor public schools work under the belief that great curriculum will only work with great teachers and instructional strategies. Based on this belief, teachers regularly go through professional development and training to help them deliver superior instruction to the students.

The elementary curriculum the district uses is Storytown. This curriculum has built in interventions for students who are struggling in reading and writing. The district also has five instructional coaches in place to help teachers learn how to deliver the curriculum effectively. Students learn fluency, comprehension and decoding in elementary school, as well as reading and writing for purpose and information.

During the elementary grades, students learn math fluency and comprehension in addition to communication in math and application of math principles. Content in science begins in first grade and continues through the end of elementary school. Students learn the basics of science, such as inquiry, theorizing, observation and questioning, in addition to principles of Life and Physical Science.

New anthologies and books were adopted for the middle and high school English classes in 2009. With these resources, teachers are able to help students read and write for purpose, pleasure and information. After completing middle school English and two years of composition in high school, students are then able to complete their graduation requirements through elective course options covering both reading and writing.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oak Harbor District Curriculum

In Math, students take Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. Following these courses, students may choose from Calculus, Pre-Calculus or Statistics to complete their graduation requirements. The only Science required by the state is Biology, although freshman in Oak Harbor take a Physical Science survey course their freshman year, and then either Chemistry or Physics.

Students are able to access learning resources through their schools to support their independent goals and needs. The curriculum provides for character development education, arts education, technology education, and many other possibilities that can help students begin to connect knowledge to its applications. Students will have chances to learn collaboratively and to see their contributions in group projects. Beyond core academics, the experiential learning that students participate in is a strong counterpart to academic knowledge.
