Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rapid City District Curriculum
In Mathematics, students are taught at an early age the use of number concepts, skills, geometry, and probability, and they use manipulatives and technology within their instruction to achieve the knowledge needed to succeed and be prepared for the higher math concepts later on in the upper grades. In high school, students study equations, relationships and other areas of algebra, spatial relations and proofs in geometry, and a range of methods for analyzing quantitative data.
In Language Arts, primary teachers engross the children in reading and writing through the use of read aloud texts, fiction books, nonfiction books, guided reading instruction, teaching the phonetic skills needed to spell correctly, modeling correct reading and writing, manipulative word study, and independent reading. Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum to give students a tool for learning, a means of communication, and a topic to study.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Elementary Science Teacher
The elementary science teacher sets forth the foundation for discovery learning and thinking in a scientific way. Students must be guided and instructed on how to think this way, and how to communicate, ask questions, analyze information from their experiments, and reach purposeful conclusions. The elementary science teacher begins this process of thinking so that the students can continue to develop and thrive, and be prepared for the higher-level thinking skills that will be required later on in one's education.
