Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Johns Creek District Curriculum

All Fulton County Schools have the STEM Program. STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This program targets multiple disciplinary concepts and ideas in the STEM areas and then develops students’ ability to apply cross-related STEM principals and problem solving skills in multiple settings. Throughout all grade levels and subject matter the STEM Program focuses on practical applications.

Beginning in elementary school the curriculum builds upon a Continuous Achievement Model, the use of this model affords teachers the ability to challenge students to their reach their highest possible level of achievement before they leave elementary school. The middle schools use the thematic approach to classroom instruction which creates joint collaboration among teachers and students alike. This approach offers all involved a chance to learn to work as a team in the exploration of skill development across all curriculum areas. The high school curriculum focuses on preparing the students for either college or a career while encouraging them to explore wide and diverse areas of academics.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Reading

It is an understatement to say that reading is important. Reading is crucial to every aspect of our lives. Many children refuse to read because they complain that it is boring and they have more fun things to do with their time. The problem may lie in two areas. Either they are lacking literacy skills due to a gap in their education or due to a learning problem or they simply have not found a genre of reading that excites their imagination and grabs their attention. If you are certain that the problem is not related to learning gaps or problems then try taking them to a bookstore and letting them peruse the aisles until they find a subject that interests them. Ask them questions about what they like before you go. Then steer them in that direction. Once they pick a book out ask them questions related to comprehension such as; What are the main characters like? What do you think will happen at the end of the book? Can you explain why that is happening? Pushing your child to read something they are not interested in will not improve their reading skills it will only cause then to further hate reading and view it as a chore.
