Schools in the city of Watertown, New York are part of the Watertown City School District. The district follows the Common Core Curriculum Framework in core subjects of English, History and Social Studies, Foreign Languages, Math and Science. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Watertown District Curriculum

In English and Language Arts, student follow the foundations of the Common Core Curriculum which leads to a command of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the English language. At the middle and high school level, students study complex literature in both fiction and nonfiction and learn to write advanced level compositions and research reports with appropriate factual research and critical evaluation.

In Math, students in all grades from pre-K through high school are taught based on the fundamentals required by the Common Core Curriculum Framework. The fundamentals of the program are to teach Math by concept rather than by rote memorization. The program includes the teaching of numbers, basic arithmetic operation, Geometry, Algebra, measurement and data use. In middle and high school, students take coursework in Algebra and Geometry, and high school students are encouraged to take additional coursework including Trigonometry, Algebra II, Calculus and Statistics.

Keeping Informed: Recent Watertown Educational News

  • Peer Buddies - Peer Buddies a new club at Watertown High School was started by a student who had been in a similar club in another school. The club’s purpose is to be buddy or friend to handicapped students in the school and to help make special needs students feel like they are part of the school. When member students have their free period they share it with their assigned peer buddy. The club currently has ten members.
  • Fundraising Events - The senior class of the Watertown High School recently held their Holiday Ball which is a fundraiser for the senior class. The dance was held during the holiday and decorations were made by both students and parents. The Holiday Ball was held in the gym of the Watertown High School. Teachers involved with the fundraiser included Ms. Mentry and Ms. Wood. The fundraiser was a big success and one in which many participated!
  • Common Core - The National PTA has published a Parents’ Guide to Student Success to explain to parents the new expectations for students with the adoption of the Common Core State Standards Curriculum. More than 40 states have now adopted the curriculum. There is a Guide for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade and one for High School level English and Language Arts and a third for High School level Mathematics. The guides are available as a pdf.file.

Chalk Talk: Resources for Budding Scientists

A website for children who want to learn more about the world of atoms and molecules is Molecularium. This website which is sponsored by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, with funding from the National Science Foundation, makes atoms, molecules, molecular properties and structures to life. The site has games such as Nanospace which is billed as a Molecular Theme Park, and the Molecularium Riding Snow Flakes game. The games combine educational information with fun in video game type format for kids at the elementary school level.
