Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pierre District Curriculum
According to the No Child Left Behind Act, all students must reach Adequate Yearly Progress in the core subject areas. In Reading, students are taught by highly qualified educators, as well as other members of the faculty, such as the reading specialist, Title One reading teacher, Special Education teacher, and Gifted Education instructor. Instructional assistants are also used to help those who need more assistance with reading comprehension strategies, building vocabulary and language skills, or to challenge those who exceed the reading requirements.
In Math, resources are also used. Math Coaches help the teachers with showing them the best practices and methods to use in the classroom, differentiated instruction is used (as many students are on various levels in mathematics), instructional assistants are assigned small groups of children, if needed, and of course Gifted and Special Education teachers are used in this subject area as well. It takes many people, besides the actual classroom teacher, to help the students achieve AYP for the state.

Chalk Talk: Preparatory Courses in Technology
Many students wish to attend a trade school instead of going to a four-year (or more!) college or university. This is very important, as we as a society need these professions and the professionals who work these types of occupations. There are many classes that students can take in the tech field, as well as careers to choose from, such as: automotive tech, computer technician, electrician, radio and television production, health occupation worker, building trades, machinist, and much more. These occupations are vital to our country and world, and students can get a jump-start on them in high school!
