Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sturgis District Curriculum

Meade School District adheres to effective teaching practices, as the instructors are given many opportunities for staff development to keep up-to-date with the best teaching practices. In the K-12 curriculum of Mathematics, Reading, History, and Science, the teachers and all of the resources combined provide a tiered instructional experience for the students. Specifically, in the teaching of mathematics on the primary level, the students are off to a good start by learning about numbers and their connections and relationships, place value to the 100’s place, and the many types and attributes of shapes.

In Reading, the students begin with phonemic awareness and an introduction to stories, story features, and ways to discuss reading. Students soon become independent readers who develop preferences, and so the curriculum provides them with a chance to experience all types of literature. Teachers show students how to deconstruct meaning and ways to construct an analytic response to text. Through these experiences, students gain valuable critical thinking and analytic skills.
