Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kansas City District Curriculum
Building a solid foundation in the core subjects of Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science, the curriculum also delves into elective material, with in-depth instruction in the fine arts, health and physical education, and computer technology. In the Sciences, engagement in hands-on activities from an early age complements students’ natural inclination to learn. High school grades bring that inquiry into the students’ hands, with labs that encourage students to take ownership over their own learning and scientific questions.
Kansas City Public Schools offers the unique Pylon Honors program for highly motivated students, providing differentiated learning in addition to the core standards. An emphasis on inquiry-based learning is critical within the district. High expectations and an atmosphere of academic rigor are promoted as cornerstones of the district’s curriculum. Instructors within the district are provided with regular professional development with a focus on providing for student success.

Chalk Talk: Using Objects to Illuminate Your World—And Your School
Have you ever visited a museum and stood in front of an object that took your breath away? The real deal--a fossil from millions of years ago, an ancient mummy, a priceless work of art? Objects can hold very powerful, personal meaning, and objects can tell stories that we might never forget, which then turn into our own stories as we pass them on to others. Teachers will often supplement their own instruction with material they bring from home or from someplace special to help drive home the meaning of their lesson.
Imagine a lesson on the fall of the Berlin Wall that actually had a piece of the wall to pass around. Objects become more than just “stuff,” and can be a connection to the past. The next time you present a topic in class, think about tying your talk to an item that you can pass around to your classmates and teacher. It doesn’t have to be expensive or out of the ordinary, and it should have personal meaning. Use it a guidepost to help become a more involved learner and to teach your peers. See how the meaning of the object changes when a story is attached to it.
