Cumberland District and Curriculum

The Cumberland Public School System supports learning and 21st century skills for the students it services. Cumberland Schools are part of Race to The Top, a federal initiative aimed at improving student performance. As a result, the district is shifting its curriculum to reflect Common Core Standards. This shift will be completed by 2015 and students will be evaluated through Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, also known as PARCC assessments.

We currently cover the following Cumberland-area school district: Cumberland School Department.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cumberland District Curriculum

The Common Core Curriculum emphasizes Math and Language Arts as they are fundamental for learning in other areas. Math education is built along the strands of numerical operations, algebra, geometry, data analysis and seeks to bring about overall mathematic literacy and communication skills. In Language Arts, instruction in reading, writing and verbal communication is intricately linked and skills in each are built over the years. Students are expected to develop critical thinking abilities such as analytic thinking and idea generation.

Core subjects are a focus, but world languages and fine arts are also an important facet for middle and high schools students. By seventh grade, students will have studied the language, grammar, and culture of either French or Spanish speaking countries. In high school, there are elective offerings that provide the opportunity to make cross-curricular connections. As a result, students receive a well-rounded education that helps develop an open mind. This will ultimately equip them with the skills they need to be successful in a global economy.

Chalk Talk: All Day Kindergarten

According the National Education Association (NEA), children who participate in full day kindergarten classes become more proficiently prepared for elementary school in the areas of math and literacy. Cumberland supports this research and offers full day kindergarten to its students. The kindergarten experience requires real preparation for each child, they will need to know what to expect and have routines in place to establish patterns of success. Becoming a student is new, but natural, territory, and fears should be allayed so that children can anticipate kindergarten with excitement.
