Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Norwich District Curriculum
The Norwich City School District recently implemented the Common Core Curriculum as approved in Board of Regents. The main goal of the new rigorous standards is to institute a curriculum that prepares students for both college and the workforce with the appropriate skills in English & Language Arts and Mathematics. In ELA, this means that students focus on reading both informational text and literature and in developing the critical skills to analyze the reading material, and write and talk about what they have read.
In Mathematics, students learn basic math skills such as arithmetic including numbers, addition, subtraction, measurement, multiplication, division, fractions, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics with progressively more challenging level of complexity. The goal is for students to become literate in both ELA and Mathematics and be able to use these skills to deal with new life and work problems with confidence.
