Lansing District and Curriculum

The city of Lansing is a diverse, vibrant, and growing community, and the Lansing School District and the Waverly Community Schools, serves students from a variety of cultural backgrounds, is a reflection of this dynamic city. With magnet schools that cater to different interests and cultural programs that extend learning beyond the classroom, both districts collaborates with families and the community to meet the needs of its diverse learners.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lansing District Curriculum

Students study a variety of genres and texts as part of the English and Language Arts program in the Lansing School District. They learn to read fluently and develop an understanding of deep meaning within text. Using authentic literature, students are exposed to a variety of genres designed to grow their vocabulary and teach them a variety of comprehension strategies.

The Mathematics curriculum in Lansing schools focuses on teaching students about the different areas of mathematics and how they relate to each other. Starting in the lower grades, students will learn geometry, measurement, and develop number sense. As they grow older, their view of mathematics will expand as they learn fractions and algebra. The transition into high school includes even more challenging topics like statistics and introduces students to calculus.

Keeping Informed: Recent Lansing Educational News

  • Green Initiatives - Lansing schools are going green! Altogether, the district is spending over $1 million to improve energy efficiency and cut wasteful spending. As part of this, many of the systems will get digital upgrades and the schools will use less paper overall. With many steps being taken, the efficiency improvements should pay off in myriad ways.
  • Grant Awards - The Lansing School District is always striving for growth and development. In 2011, they were the recipient of a sizable grant which they used to expand their Kindergarten Readiness program by over 30 percent. The funds are provided by the Great Start Readiness Program which seeks to help young children prepare for and transition into Kindergarten.
  • Kindergarten Readiness - The Lansing Community College joined forces with the Lansing School District to offer even more choices for children who are preparing for Kindergarten. Together, these two organizations created Early LCC Kindergarten which focuses on experiential learning.

These days, there is a major push to include a variety of authentic literature in classrooms. This is different than in the past when students often read material written solely for the classroom. Now, most reading and literature classes use materials written for general audiences. For example, instead of reading from a text book, teachers will pass out magazines or newspapers. This style of teaching leads to real world experiences and extends learning beyond the classroom.
