Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pulaski District Curriculum
The Social Studies curriculum at Pulaski County Public Schools combines history with skills learned in reading or other classes. During their education, students learn how each subject enriches others. The history of the U.S. prior to 1865 is enriched through books such “A Journey to the New World,” “The Starving Time,” and “If You Live in Colonial Times." This is then built on as students learn about the government in Virginia, at the local and state level.
Science begins with students learning about the basics, such as the simple parts of plants. This is added onto when teachers use hands-on experiences to help children see that science is in the world around them. The study of plants is extended when students and teachers develop a window farming experience and use aquaponics to grow and produce strawberries. These excitement building activities lead the way to classes in high school, like biology, or chemistry, where they can experience the world of science through more hands-on activities.

Chalk Talk: How to Motivate Summer Readers
As summer rolls through, opportunities abound to help students stay fresh in their educational skills. One such skill is their reading ability. This skill can be improved upon through motivation of readers throughout the summer. One way to do this is to set a goal of the number of pages or books the child thinks they can read before school begins again. This can be rewarded by small tokens for intermediate goals, such as stickers, or small toys. Then when they meet their ultimate goal, perhaps reward it with a larger item, such as a sleepover. Another way to encourage summer readers is to check out the local libraries. Many offer summer reading programs that offer incentives or activities to keep children reading for fun. These efforts in reading will also be rewarded when school begins again in the fall and the child does not struggle to start reading again.
