Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mint Hill District Curriculum

Research-based inquiry and critical reading proficiencies are skills needed even after graduation. The CCSS Initiative implements those skills into the learning objectives for all grade levels and across the curriculum subject areas. The ability to problem-solve in math can be applied to all areas of life as well, and an emphasis is placed on that too, even in the standards for kindergarteners.

Good decision-making and wise planning is essential to be a productive citizen, and Social Studies/History provides the foundation for good citizenship. A balanced curriculum that covers a range of cultures, economies, and peoples will give students a worldview essential for the global economy they are already participating in. By introducing students to these concepts, and increasing their conceptual awareness of our global society, students become well prepared to handle post-secondary academics and the broad theories and concepts introduced at that level.

Chalk Talk: Using a Planner

Whether you use an electronic planner on your smartphone or you prefer a wire-bound calendar, use a planner to help you plot out and visualize your schedule. Create blocks of times that indicate when you are in class, at lunch, participating in extra-curricular activities, working…and studying. Yes, schedule a time to study—it’ll be more likely to happen if you’ve written it down. Creating a daily schedule also will help you to set time aside to relax. Making a time for everything and doing it then relieves you of the stress of trying to multi-task, thereby improving the quality of what you’re doing. Take a few minutes every evening or afternoon to update your planner with upcoming tests, review sessions, and assignment due dates, and you won’t wake up in the middle of the night, panicking over an 8:00 AM test you forgot!
