The Taos Municipal School District is committed to providing an excellent level of education in an environment that is both safe and wholesome. The importance of technology is stressed in the curriculum to prepare students for life as an adult in the 21st century. Alternative learning systems are provided for students that do not do well in the traditional educational environment.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Taos District Curriculum
The Taos Municipal School District has recently implemented the state approved and mandated Common Core Curriculum Framework across all schools in the district. Common Core is an evidence based curriculum with a focus on providing students with the skills they will need in the workforce and for further education. Currently Common Core is confined to the study of Mathematics and English and Language Arts (ELA); however the fundamentals of the English and Language Arts curriculum are also applied to other coursework including Science, Social Studies and Technology coursework.
In Mathematics, students are taught computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics and measurement. These skills begin in the earliest grades and builds in difficulty each year. The goal is for students to be mathematically fluent by the time they leave high school with the ability to apply what they have learned to higher math and math issues found in college mathematics and the workplace.

Keeping Informed: Recent Taos Educational News
- High School Hockey - The Land of Enchantment Amateur Hockey Association (LOEAHA) and the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League (NMIHL) met recently to discuss creating two separate divisions by age group in New Mexico. The proposal to create two divisions was voted down and hockey in Taos will continue as before. In recent years Taos High School has been named state champions six times.
- Honors for High School Alumni - An alumnus of Taos High School, Henrietta Martinez Christmas, was recently honored by the National Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) with the Historic Preservation Award. Christmas is a well known historian in New Mexico and was given the award for her work in the area of Hispanic and New Mexico genealogy. She also volunteers her time at local and state historical societies. Christmas is the first Hispanic to receive the award.
- Taos Integrated School of the Arts - The Taos Municipal School District has a new charter school known as the Taos Integrated School of the Arts which provides education from kindergarten through 8th grade with a focus on multiculturalism and integrated arts. The charter school partners with parents and the surrounding community to provide an arts centered education with a strong academic curriculum starting at in the early years. In addition to academics, students study visual art, theater, music, and writing.

Here is where you will find an overview of Common Core Curriculum which has been adopted as the state curriculum in most states across the country. There is also information on school safety issues and updates on the organization’s fight to have Congress approve comprehensive legislation on school safety. The Reference Center on the site provides current statistics and data on ongoing and completed studies on education including the cost to schools when corporations don’t pay their fair share in corporate taxes and articles on the importance of early learning and the prevention of bullying in public schools.
