Chalk Talk: Why Daily Reading Is Important

With all the distractions of the Internet, social media and video games, it can be difficult to get your child to sit down with a good book and read for a few minutes. Obviously, the more your child reads the better at it they will become. But reading provides other benefits as well. Reading is a form of exercise for the brain. Reading strengthens the connections in our brains and even builds new ones. Children who often read exhibit far greater concentration than kids who don’t. As kids read more and more often, their ability to concentrate increases, which in turn improves their performance across the board in school. Nonfiction and fiction reading alike help children learn about other peoples and places, opens their minds to new ideas and gives them access to events that they might not otherwise have the chance to experience.
