Homewood District and Curriculum
The curriculum is intended to produce students who are ready to embrace their future as knowledgeable, educated people who understand and apply a core body of knowledge and skills across the curriculum and who take responsibility for their own learning. Students should be able to read for comprehension and synthesis and use a variety of techniques, resources, and technology to gather information, which they then organize, analyze, and retain. These students are also critical thinkers who use analytic thinking to evaluate and refine strategies to solve problems.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Homewood District Curriculum
The goal of the curriculum is to foster a collaborative attitude amongst students who treat themselves and others with respect and work within a variety of groups to achieve their goals. Students learn to use a wide range of technological resources, how to use their time effectively and efficiently and monitor their own progress through self-evaluation. After graduation, these students will be responsible individuals who demonstrate ethical behavior and participate in society in constructive ways.
Students should also be able to transfer acquired knowledge to life experiences. Students are required to be effective communicators who observe attentively, speak effectively, write clearly and expressively, and demonstrate good listening skills. Students use these skills to become quality investigators of concepts who demonstrate a commitment to establish, meet, and exceed goals and reflect pride, creativity, and scholarly achievement in their work.

Chalk Talk: Art Schools
A common misconception among students (and especially parents) is that art schools are somehow easier than other schools, and that students who attend art schools can’t get into other schools. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Art colleges are often very competitive and require applicants to submit an accomplished portfolio. Once accepted, students work very hard with classes sometimes lasting several hours, including studio time. Students’ work is critiqued, often harshly, and the focus of these programs is often to gear students toward showings of work and internships. When they graduate, these students tend to be accomplished artists with internships and shows under their belts. This is, at least partly, because these colleges know that in order to survive they must be competitive, especially in the eyes of parents, so they do everything they can to make sure of that.
