Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Red Bank District Curriculum
The Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards drive curriculum development in each of the three local school districts. The former outlines what students should learn at each grade level in math and language arts. The latter provides guidance for student learning in the following subjects: health and physical education, visual and performing arts, 21st Century life and careers, technology, world languages, science and social studies.
The world languages standard requires students to become proficient in the use of a foreign language. In order to do this, students begin learning a foreign language in elementary school. Students first learn how to speak and recognize basic spoken words and phrases such as the days of the week and common household items. In middle school, students acquire the skills to carry on basic conversations, read simple texts and write short passages in the language under study. In high school, students engage in complex conversations with other foreign language speakers. Students develop advanced reading and writing skills as well.

Chalk Talk: Writing a College Admissions Essay
Many colleges require an essay as part of a student’s application to the institution. Some schools provide specific topics on which students must write, while other schools leave the topic up to the student. Whatever the case, there are several rules to keep in mind when writing an admissions essay. Here are two: First, demonstrate your intellectual prowess. There’s no need to go into great detail about your coursework and grades since those are evident on your transcripts, but it is important to convey that you have a love for learning and that you are adept at it. After all, colleges are bastions of academia, so proving your academic worth is important. Second, be likable. It’s difficult to talk about one’s self, but it is imperative to convey who you are as a person beyond your academic performance. What do you like to do in your spare time? What’s your favorite book? Give personal details that will allow an admissions officer to get to know you are outside the classroom.
