Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodbury District Curriculum

The Woodbury City Public Schools has devised a comprehensive curriculum that educates the whole child. District students acquire the academic knowledge and skills they need to be successful, but they also receive instruction that fosters their social, emotional and physical growth as well. The district’s curriculum is based on best practices and current research and is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards as well as the Common Core State Standards.

As part of the social studies curriculum, students examine the beginnings of human society. Students look at the social structure of early peoples and compare and contrast that with modern-day societies. Migratory patterns of early peoples are analyzed, and students explain how these patterns were influenced by geographic and climatic factors. Students determine the benefits of the agricultural revolution and identify the ways in which societies changed as a result of the development of farming. Lastly, students examine early languages and explain how the development of writing facilitated the communication of ideas.

Chalk Talk: Three Tips for Picking a College

With so many factors that go into selecting a college – expense, program offerings and scholarship opportunities to name a few – the process of finding the right one can be a long and frustrating one. To help your child pick the right college for their needs, suggest these three easy tips. First, have your child create a pros and cons list for each school on their list. Being able to visualize what each school has to offer as well as what each school lacks can help eliminate some possibilities and zero in on a final choice. Second, help your child analyze the financial aid packages each school is offering. Being realistic about the expense of each school can narrow down the list of possible schools, especially if your child will be responsible for taking out student loans. Lastly, suggest that you child contacts professors or department heads in the areas they wish to study. Course offerings and degree programs differ from institution to institution, so investigating what each school has to offer on a department level can provide valuable information for making a final college choice.
