Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lawrenceville District Curriculum
Elementary school students (K-5) will be learning in English Language Arts to read more non-fiction texts, progressing to more challenging texts and using evidence from what is read in their writing. Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding and communication through writing. Math learning for K-5 students involves more time on less topics, with practice and memorization of math facts and application of skills to real world problems to demonstrate understanding.
Middle school and high school students move from the foundational learning to more advanced, critical thinking and reasoning. English Language Arts will be a focus of increasingly more complex text, with more time spent on informational text and writing than literary. Literacy is also integrated into Science, Social Studies and technical subjects. Mathematics includes connecting mathematical concepts of proportion, geometry, scale drawing, algebraic equations and modeling for contextual problems.

Chalk Talk: Test Anxiety
Every student has it. Whether for one test, all tests or THE test, students feel the pressure of “proving” they know what was taught to them. Every student, from kindergarten through college, has to experience test-taking. And it doesn’t make a difference if the test is oral, written, in the classroom or out on the playground….there is still an “uh-oh” running through students’ minds. How can we lessen the anxiety or even get rid of it? There are many different theories about preparing students for tests to lessen that anxiety: have students do their homework in a test-taking situation; a single notecard of notes can be brought to the test; LOTS of review. However your child prepares for a test, know they may still experience text anxiety. With every test, reassuring your student will take a tremendous weight off their shoulders. After all, they’re trying to prove their knowledge to you – parent and teacher.
