Ossining District and Curriculum
The town of Ossining is located within the Ossining Union Free School District. The district is comprised of one Pre-K-K school, three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The New York State Learning Standards and New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards serve as the basis of classroom work and instruction in Ossining. The New York State Learning Standards were adopted by the state in 1996, and guide curricula in subject areas such as health, the arts, and science.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ossining District Curriculum
The New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards were adopted in 2011, and guide schools’ English Language Arts and Math curricula. Beginning in the earliest grades, students in English Language arts master the skills of close reading, research, reasoning, speaking, writing, and listening. Students do this by working through a challenging, internationally benchmarked curriculum that requires them to read widely and write fluently.
The schools’ math curriculum is also internationally benchmarked. Students in Ossining’s math classes focus only on the most important core mathematics concepts. They learn these core concepts in the earliest grades and build on them grade-by-grade, developing their abilities to understand complex mathematics statements, think abstractly, look for patterns and structure, model and solve real-world problems, and communicate mathematics concepts clearly. The new thinking in the curriculum recognizes these skills are important ways of thinking that students should have when they embark on their college and career goals.

Keeping Informed: Recent Ossining Educational News
- Stem-D Conference - A group of Anne M. Dorner students presented their Scratch programming and Makey Makey circuit boards at the recent PACE University Stem-D Conference. Anne M. Dorner teachers Ms. Dibari, Ms. Naughton, and Ms. Forsberg accompanied the students throughout the event.
- Art Educator Award - The New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA) has honored an Ossining educator. The NYSATA has named Ron Whitehead, an art teacher at Ossining High School, as the recipient of the Art Educator Award for Region 7. This award recognizes Whitehead for excellence in teaching and for his contributions to quality art education.
- Pioneer Award - An Ossining High School English teacher will receive the Pioneer Award from the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center. Adam Schoenbart, a teacher of English 10 and electives, will receive the award in honor of his contributions to the innovative use of technology.

It’s no secret that art education is being pushed out of U.S. schools in favor of “core subjects.” Whereas 30 years ago a student would take part in applied art education many times a week, today’s students are lucky if they see the inside of an art class a couple of times a month. The problems that today’s students will face in the future are the kinds of problems that need creative solutions. It is our duty to produce students who have creative, flexible minds. Students learn a range of hands-on techniques in different arts that can help them understand how the world was made with aesthetic values in mind. Also, it can connect students with the artisans in their own community and promote a greater arts culture. Art education teaches gives students the tools to develop creativity and flexibility. If art isn’t a “core subject,” then what is?
