Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Vestal District Curriculum
Vestal’s math curriculum is designed to teach students core mathematics concepts in the earliest grades. In these grades student develop an understanding of numeration, problem solving, abstract thinking, and reasoning that they build upon as they move up through subsequent grades. Students learn about math as it relates to engineering and technology, as well, so that students can see how it is used in everyday applications.
The English Language Arts curriculum is designed to teach student to read and write about a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. It also develops students’ speaking, listening, and language skills, and teaches students to apply them in all subject areas. Research is also a key component of the Language Arts curriculum, and students learn how to locate information, evaluate its usefulness and relevance, determine an author’s point of view, and incorporate their thoughts into their own work.

Chalk Talk: Leading By Example
The next time you are talking to your child about not reading enough or not working on their handwriting ask yourself when you last read and worked on you handwriting. Your child learns by doing, but he or she also learns by seeing. Your child models the things he or she sees you do. So, if you are watching TV and messing around on the Internet instead of reading and developing new skills, your child will assume that he or she is supposed to do the same thing. If your child sees you reading and learning new and interesting thing, he or she will be more interesting in reading and learning new things. The best option is always to learn together – when children are young, days spent at the children’s museum can develop a child’s love of learning for a lifetime. Going to national parks and other historic sites together is another way to learn while really just enjoying your time with each other.
