Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Harrisburg District Curriculum

For Math, students are taught how to count and write numbers with their proper place values. Moving forward with higher grades, they are taught to perform simple arithmetic sums of addition and subtraction. Children are also taught the different types of shapes, flat shapes and solid shapes with examples of real live objects to make them better understand each shape, the number of corners and edges they have and then eventually teach them how to find the area and other geometric properties.

For English, students are taught sounds and alphabet writing and recognition in the beginning at elementary level. Bigger and complex words and sentences are introduced gradually and special reading and writing exercises are conducted for the students to keep practicing whatever they have learnt. Special reading and writing competitions are held frequently to encourage the children’s independent writing and reading habits.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Sports Participation

Sports are a compulsory activity for children. Nowadays, many children prefer sitting inside their homes with their computers or latest gadgets, totally engrossed in playing any online game or simply chatting with friends. That makes the child dull and inactive. It is better off to make the child go out in any nearby park where he/she plays with their friends. Whether they play on the swings or create a team and play soccer, there is nothing like physical exercise. Physical exercise makes a healthy body, which in turn makes a healthy mind. You can also register your child in any sports arena to play or learn any new kind of sport under the supervision of trained and experienced instructors. A child gets to socialize and make new friends once s/he is out and may even get a chance to enter into any local or international sports competitions.
