Lilburn District and Curriculum

Students living in Lilburn attend Gwinnett County Public Schools. Students learn Academic Skills and Knowledge (AKS), a set of expectations aligned with Georgia Performance Standards and the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards at each grade level for what students should understand, know and be able to do. Instruction, student work and assessments follow these expectations. Students are also encouraged to participate in extracurriculars that connect them to personal, athletic, academic and career goals.

We currently cover the following Lilburn-area school district: Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lilburn District Curriculum

The impending Common Core State Standards for Mathematics will result in shifts in focus (fewer standards, with material being learned more in-depth), coherence (mathematical concepts learned in each grade will build upon one another), and rigor (students will understand how they solved a problem, the meaning of an answer they got, and how to apply mathematical concepts to their everyday lives). Algebra, geometry, and data analysis are three areas of math that are particularly emphasized in high school.

The AKS curriculum is found in all core subjects. Teaching and learning is rigorous, involving critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning within the concepts. Students are prepared for not only national assessments but for the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the future. Parent and student resources for K-12 core subjects are available at this link.

Chalk Talk: eBooks

The reading list can always be a challenge for students. Not only buying or borrowing the books, but also trying to get your child to complete the book or book project. Many books are available in digital form. These books can be downloaded on an ipad, tablet, laptop, even phone, making access to reading (and finishing) the required books easier for students. eBooks can be found through the local library (although there may be a wait on getting the ebook) or through the App store on your device. Students also can search for books based on categories or genres they are interested in, which can help them find the right book for them. Students are using technology more often in schools now; reading on their devices can continue the learning at home and may be one less challenge for you and your student during the summer months.
