Chalk Talk: Anatomy Topics Review
Our teeth are essential when it comes to eating and making certain speech sounds. Some high school courses will examine the details of their anatomy and physiology, usually with an emphasis of the number and types of teeth. Although it may look as though a tooth is solid, each one is actually made up of four main parts. The enamel is the outer covering of the tooth and it is the hardest material in the body. Enamel is translucent but since it covers an off-white (or yellow) part of the tooth, it appears to be a different color. It can be worn away over time when you drink large amounts of soda, eat lots of fruits, or have acid reflux disease. Those that grind their teeth in their sleep will also experience some enamel loss. The next part of the tooth is the dentin. This tissue is the main part of the tooth and gives teeth their color. The pulp of a tooth contains the nerve and produces dentin. This part is removed during a root canal. Finally, the root of a tooth secures it to the jaw. Different types of teeth have different amounts of roots.
