Chalk Talk: Divisibility Rules
When taking the GRE, ACT, or any math test, using shortcuts can be very helpful. It’s possible to determine whether an integer is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 in one or a few simple steps. An integer is divisible by 2 if it is even and 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. For example, the number 240 is even and the sum of its digits comes to 6. This means that it can be divided by 2 and 3. You can follow similar steps when determining if a number is divisible by 4 or 6. For larger numbers, if the last two digits together at the end are divisible by 4, then the entire number will be divisible by 4 as well. So 5,369 is not divisible by 4 since 69 divided by 4 leaves a remainder. The rule for 5 is more commonly known: if the number ends in 0 or 5, it’s divisible by 5. If a number can be divided by both 2 and 3 without a remainder, it is divisible by 6.
