Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Forest Lake District Curriculum
Forest Lake’s middle school math curriculum introduces students to essential topics in algebra. Learners begin to work with functions, recognizing that functions represent a relationship between two variables. Independent and dependent variables are explored, with students developing an understanding that the value of the independent variable determines the value of the dependent variable. Students also become adept at using functional notation to represent such relationships. Learners acquire the ability to represent linear functions in a variety of ways, including with symbols, tables, graphs, and equations.
Elementary aged students become informed about health-related issues as part of their participation in the district’s health sciences curriculum. Students learn how to set attainable health-related goals and devise plans to achieve those goals. Using self-reflection techniques, learners evaluate their progress towards their goals, while brainstorming new ways to achieve better health as well. Students also explore the different types of peer pressure and develop strategies to resist pressure from friends to engage in unhealthy activities.

Chalk Talk: Mentoring Programs Benefit Students
Schools that have implemented mentoring programs have realized a wide variety of benefits. Mentors take on an advocacy role, working to improve the school experience of those that they mentor. Mentors and mentees can likewise build an effective relationship in which both parties benefit from personal growth and development. Mentoring programs also bring about changes in academics. Students that are mentored have higher grades and better attendance than their non-mentored peers. Additionally, students that are mentored see improved scores on standardized tests. These positive gains are seen for students of all backgrounds, but particularly so for minority students and those from a low socioeconomic home environment. For the mentors, their role as a positive role model impacts the way they interact with people throughout their life.
