Students who attend Navasota Independent School District are instructed according to the objectives in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The frameworks instill in students the ability to take on increasingly complex work and prepares them for the ever-changing global community. Although the TEKS provides the goals for core academic and elective learning, the schools are also able to use curriculum guides from organizations such as Advanced Placement to give students the chance to take college level courses. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Navasota District Curriculum
The philosophy of the Language Arts curriculum is to enact a sequential program that provides essential reading and writing skills. The reading program aims to develop students who chose to read and have an appreciation for varied styles of literature. Students are taught a rigorous reading comprehension and writing agenda as a means of using literature to extend their academic, social, and personal lives. Emphasis of these goals enables students to develop necessary critical thinking skills.
The Social Studies curriculum builds on the basic reading and writing principles by acknowledging nine standards for excellence. Students are taught the basis of societal structure through knowledge of history, geography, political institutions, and economic systems. Students then learn how individuals interact within these societies by learning to utilize resources, studying diverse cultures, demonstrating knowledge in the fields of sociology and psychology, and recognizing sovereignty of individuals and nations.
