EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

My teaching/tutoring style balances between didactic instruction and student-centered dialogue. I believe that by giving students the necessary skills to write well, they will become better writers and communicators in their academic careers. Though it is very rewarding to hear my students say they love to write and read because of my help, I know not all students will have this sentiment. My primary goal is for all of my students to feel confident in their critical reading and writing skills.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I received my Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree at Northern Illinois University (NIU). For my undergraduate degree, I majored in English and double minored in Communications and History. I graduated Summa cum laude in 2010. During my time as a graduate student, my focus was in British/American literature. I specialize in 20th Century American literature, especially those works by Southern authors.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

While I was working on my Master’s, I taught Rhetoric and Composition I and II. I also worked as a tutor in NIU’s Writing lab where I worked with a diverse group of students. In the Writing Lab, I also had experience helping ESL students. At Kankakee Community College, I taught Fundamentals of Writing, Microsoft Word 2010, English I, and English II.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

As a graduate student at Northern Illinois University, I was a judge for the Showcase of Student Writing and served as Mentor for the New Teaching Assistants/Interns. I volunteered as an editorial assistant on two works,Towers magazine and Y1 Writes Volume II. During my time as an undergraduate student, I was the Fundraising Coordinator for Northern Illinois University’s Student Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC-NIU). I also worked as a docent at NIU’s Anthropology museum.
