    Understanding the SBAC

Smarter Balanced assessments are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and were developed by a consortium of educators across the country based on best practices and developing trends in assessments. The tests are taken in grades 3-8 and in high school and are administered during the last 12 weeks of school. The subjects covered are Math and English Language Arts/Literacy and the tests use a variety of question types to assess students’ proficiency in reaching each standard for their grade level.

Each subject area test contains multiple-choice questions, extended response questions, technology-enhanced items and performance tasks. The extended response questions ask students to write a long form answer to a question or to provide their work process used in solving a math problem. The technology-enhanced items are questions that also include an additional component of text, graphs, maps or other materials that are referenced in the question. The performance tasks require that students demonstrate critical thinking and reasoning within their answer.

The SBAC tests are computer-adaptive in some sections, which means that if a student is answering questions correctly the complexity of questions will begin to increase or remain the same, and their score will be representative of their achievement level. The assessments are used to gauge both student achievement and progress of learning.
