Understanding North Carolina’s
State Tests
The North Carolina’s system of state tests begins in 3rd Grade. At the beginning of 3rd grade, students take the Beginning-of-Grade 3 (BOG3) Reading Test. From 3rd to 8th grade, students must take annual End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments in Reading and Math. In 5th and 8th grade students must also complete EOG assessments in Science. Throughout high school, students must also complete End-of-Course (EOC) tests in several subject areas including English, Math, and Biology. These tests are a graduation requirement. .
