Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alamagordo District Curriculum

In conjunction with the New Mexico Educator Leader Cadre, the district is implementing the Common Core Standards and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers program. In English and Language Arts, students learn to read, write, speak, listen and use the English language appropriately. Literacy is focused upon in all coursework including History, Social Studies, Science and Technical subjects so that students have the capacity for critical reading across subject matter.

In Mathematics, students focus in on a coherent number of subjects including computation, algebra, probability, statistics, measurement and geometry. Skills such as problem solving, abstract reasoning, and using the appropriate tools are stressed. Students are taught to apply what they have learned to real life math issues and in other areas of science and technical learning. The skills of problem-solving and critical reasoning are essential for the future success of students.

Chalk Talk: How Do Animals Keep Cool?

Summer is never too far away and that means hot weather for both humans and animals. Kids can find information about animals and their habits such as the way they keep cool in hot weather while having fun at the National Geographic Explorer Magazine website for kids. The interactive game called Photo Safari allows kids to play a fast action timed game where kids match animals to animals while learning facts such as how elephants take mud baths to beat the heat and great blue herons just take in a little more air to cool off.
