The Alamogordo Public School District is dedicated to providing an educational experience of the highest quality for the students in the district. The district believes that the joint involvement of parents and the community is directly linked to the success of student education. The focus of the educational program is to prepare students for advanced education and or success in the work force.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Alamagordo District Curriculum

In conjunction with the New Mexico Educator Leader Cadre, the district is implementing the Common Core Standards and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers program. In English and Language Arts, students learn to read, write, speak, listen and use the English language appropriately. Literacy is focused upon in all coursework including History, Social Studies, Science and Technical subjects so that students have the capacity for critical reading across subject matter.

In Mathematics, students focus in on a coherent number of subjects including computation, algebra, probability, statistics, measurement and geometry. Skills such as problem solving, abstract reasoning, and using the appropriate tools are stressed. Students are taught to apply what they have learned to real life math issues and in other areas of science and technical learning. The skills of problem-solving and critical reasoning are essential for the future success of students.

Keeping Informed: Recent Alamagordo Educational News

  • Arts Celebration - The Alamogordo Public Schools District recently celebrated the second annual Start with the Arts week. Each school in the district was invited to present artistic representations which could include visual art, performance art, or a musical experience or even storytelling. The week ended with a final celebration of the arts at the Alamogordo High School.
  • Career Exploration - Alamogordo High School recently hosted a career expo so that students could meet with more than 60 business people, representatives from colleges and other post high school educational institutions, and exhibitors. Students from the 6th grade through high school were invited to attend the event and learn about different options for a career.
  • Happy Kids - Sean Covey’s book the “7 Habits of Happy Kids” is being utilized at the Oregon Elementary School as a set of principles in which to educate children. These universal tenets are helping both students and teachers in being happy and productive. Principles such as following through, being proactive, putting first things first, and managing time well are making a difference with both staff and students at the school.

Summer is never too far away and that means hot weather for both humans and animals. Kids can find information about animals and their habits such as the way they keep cool in hot weather while having fun at the National Geographic Explorer Magazine website for kids. The interactive game called Photo Safari allows kids to play a fast action timed game where kids match animals to animals while learning facts such as how elephants take mud baths to beat the heat and great blue herons just take in a little more air to cool off.
