Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Arcata District Curriculum

The curriculum used in the schools of Arcata covers all the subject areas and provides a framework by which the objectives and expectations of learning are organized. In Math and Language Arts, the Common Core Standards is the curriculum that describes the content areas and the topics within each and statewide subject area assessments are aligned to these.

The Math curriculum provides details about the skills that students will develop in number operations, geometry, algebra, statistics and probability. In Language Arts, students develop a range of communication skills in reading, writing and other forms of communication. In Science, instruction covers the fundamental concepts of biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental science, and technology. This framework prepares students for the next steps in their education by instilling critical thinking, problem-solving and process-oriented thinking.
