Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ashland District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, students are exposed to the disciplines of reading, writing, speaking, listening, inquiring, observing and using technology to communicate. Writing is an essential part of the English curriculum and students are writing in a variety of formats and teachers are assessing their work regularly. Students read a variety of text including fiction and non-fiction and reading skills are viewed as essential in all subject-area learning.

In the Mathematics curriculum, students learn about numbers in primary school. Students use manipulatives and are introduced to basic problem-solving techniques. When basic concepts and math skills are introduced, application of these skills becomes important as it is through this that students are able to expand on higher-order reasoning skills. They will become able to use quantitative data to draw conclusions and abstract additional information.

Ashland District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Ashland Schools follow the Curriculum that was adopted by the Kentucky Department of Education. The curriculum details the expected areas of learning that students should master; the state-wide assessments are closely aligned to these specific expectations and serve as a measurement that students are achieving the standards for learning.

We currently cover the following Ashland-area school district: Ashland Independent School District.

Keeping Informed: Recent Ashland Educational News

  • School of Distinction - Hager Elementary School has been named a school of distinction. This is a result of good test results in academics. This is a great honor and the district is proud of its staff and students. The student’s test scores were tenth in Kentucky
  • Peace Day Activities - Paul Blazer High School students from the Art classes took part in a Peace Day. They created something they called pinwheels for peace and installed them around the school campus on peace day. The meaning of peace and tolerance and anti-bullying were stressed.
  • Learning from Stories - Verity Middle School students went on the annual trip to Cave Run Lake to hear well known storytellers tell great stories. The students met in Daniel Boone State Park to hear stories about culture, healing and resolving differences. Chalk Talk: How to Speak in Public

The biggest hurdle for public speaking is preparation and confidence. If you are well prepared the event will take care of itself. Know what you want to say and how you will say it. Nerves never really go away but they are calmed by good preparation. Good preparation gives you confidence. Then you can assuredly say what you have to say and enjoy the experience. Be prepared, stand up tall, say what you have to say, and enjoy doing it.
