Austin District and Curriculum
Austin Public Schools pride themselves on engaging and empowering all learners for life. Made up of nine schools, this school district serves more than 4,400 students in grades PK through 12th. Students of Austin are learning core subjects under challenging standards that are aligned to real-world knowledge needed in the workplace and college. Additionally, APS is using new state tests to measure student’s progress toward the set expectations. Most importantly, students are not required to take the high school exit GRAD test, and instead take more meaningful high school tests.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Austin District Curriculum
To ensure that students’ educational needs and goals are met, APS has a 15:1 student-teacher ratio. The school district accommodates 13% of English Language Learners and 15% of students have an Individualized Education Program. Students will begin planning activities and engaging in personally-relevant exploration at an earlier age to focus on their career and educational goals.
For more than 30 years, APS has been providing Gifted and Talented Education to meet the needs of their students – academically, cognitively, creatively and emotionally. Intervention and small group learning benefits K-4 students while secondary students may take advantage of Honors and Advance Placement courses. Students may receive college credits for their achievement in various courses as well as attend Concurrent Courses through Riverland Community College, though students must meet PSEO requirement to qualify for enrollment.

Chalk Talk: Going Mobile
Austin Public Schools released the new Parent/Student Portable Mobile App for Android devices to increase the districts ability to communicate with parents. Parents have access to their child’s schedules and assignments and can browse by specific classes or due dates. For parents with more than one child, switching from one profile to another is very simple and quick. By subscribing to school notifications, the app will alert you of real-time grades and attendance changes, along with a personalized daily planner for each class. All the information is accurate and confidential for each student. Teacher contact information is readily available such as email and phone number and can be added to your list of contacts. Parents will no longer need to log into the Campus Portal via a browser or computer and instead access it anytime and anywhere.
