Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belen District Curriculum

The schools within the Belen Consolidated School District base their school curriculum on the Common Core Curriculum Framework that has been approved for use in the State of New Mexico. Common Core Curriculum focuses on English and Language Arts and Mathematics and preparing students for further education and the workforce. In English and Language Arts students learn to read, write, speak and listen using correct English. These standards for English are also applied in Science, Social Studies, and Technology.

Students read both literature and informational text so that they are prepared for the types of reading material they may encounter at work. Learning the skills of critical analysis and reading for evidence is stressed with all reading material. In Mathematics students are focused in on core math subjects including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability and proportional reasoning. Students learn to apply math skills to real life circumstances and to be able to solve math problems with speed and confidence.

Chalk Talk: Restoring a Masterpiece

Recently listed as a top ten online art museums for kids by KidsArts.com, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts website called Restoration Online provides a unique educational experience for kids and adults alike. The website which is not primarily targeted at kids offers a step by step look at how paintings are restored. The site provides a wonderful look into the world of art and art restoration. The restoration looks at two works of art: The Erminia and the Shepherds by Guercino and Castiglione’s The Immaculate Conception. Through a photographic essay students can follow each work of art as it taken down and removed from their frames and then moved to a conservation laboratory where the piece is photographed and X-rayed, and then restored.
