Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Belgrade District Curriculum

In Mathematics, the students learn such content as multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers. In the early grades, the students are taught the concept of multiplication and division using single digit numbers, diagrams, written, and oral explanations. Students are expected to have grade level mastery of basic multiplication facts, as well as the basic division of whole number before moving onto other concepts.

In English Language Arts, the primary students are exposed to a variety of print forms, such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, songs, plays, and more. The students are engrossed in reading and writing, and are taught the phonemic awareness skills needed to develop a strong foundation for literacy. When given lessons in phonics, phonemes, meaning cues, the modeling of storytelling, and other ways of understanding text, the skills are launched to read and write, and students become successful, fluent and critical readers before they know it.
