Belleville District and Curriculum

The Belleville Public Schools serves nearly 5,000 students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. The growth and development of students is shared between the students themselves, parents, teacher and staff, as well as the community at large. To ensure that students are well prepared for life after graduation, they are engaged in a challenging K-12 curriculum that is rooted in the guidelines of the New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards and the Common Core State Standards. The skills and knowledge students acquire during their studies, ensure that they are fully prepared to take on the rigors of college and career upon their graduation from high school.

The Belleville Public Schools devise curricula that adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Common Core Standards for Math and Language Arts and the New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards which provide guidance for the knowledge students should acquire in the following areas: science, technology, world languages, social studies, health and physical education, 21st Century life and careers, and visual and performing arts.

The physical health of students is an important component of their growth. Chalk Talk: The Importance of Literacy

Being able to read and write is a fundamental skill that all people need in order to function at their highest level. But literacy is much more than just reading and writing. Studies show that one’s ability to read is strongly correlated with one’s financial success in the future. Those who read well usually have more satisfaction in their job and make more money than the average American. The converse is true for people who cannot read or read at a low level. They usually struggle to find and maintain work and make far less money over their lifetimes. There is also a strong correlation between illiteracy and the likelihood of committing criminal acts. While literacy is important for daily functioning – reading legal documents, filling out forms at work and reading menus at restaurants – it is also important for one’s financial and social success.
