Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bellmawr District Curriculum

The purpose of the Bellmawr and Black Horse Pike district curricula is to challenge students to achieve their highest potential, while preparing all students for future success. Both districts are committed to research-based and standards-based instruction that is based on best practices and the latest trends in education. Benchmarks for student learning have been established in all core content areas in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core Standards.

Beginning in preschool, students learn about the major food groups and learn about the value of eating right within the health curriculum. In elementary school, students learn about the food pyramid and gain an understanding of the kinds of foods they should and shouldn’t eat in order to be healthy. Middle school students analyze how culture, society and age influence a person’s eating habits. In high school, students learn about the relationship between nutrition and physical fitness, and analyze the eating habits of adolescents in the U.S. They also identify patterns in their own eating to determine what causes them to make dietary decisions.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Advanced Placement Classes

There are a number of benefits students derive from taking AP classes in high school. First, students acquire college-level skills. The heavy ready and writing requirements, the robust assessments and challenging coursework provide students with the critical thinking and analytical skills they will need to be successful in college. Second, students who perform well on AP exams can gain college credit for their high school AP classes. Doing so allows students to enter college having already completed a good portion of their first year’s studies. Completing these classes ahead of time means students don’t have to pay for those classes once they are in college. Lastly, AP courses look great on college admissions applications. Colleges are looking for students who challenge themselves, and AP courses are a great way to demonstrate that students have undertaken that challenge.
