Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Berkeley Township District Curriculum
In their quest to prepare students for life after schooling, the Berkeley Township School District and the Central Regional School District have both developed curricula that challenge students to learn and grow academically, socially and emotionally. Curricula in both districts are developed using the guidelines set forth in two standards-based initiatives. The Common Core Standards delineate what students should learn in math and language arts. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards outline what students should learn in all other core subjects.
The health and physical education standards are in place to provide students a foundation for physical, emotional and social well-being. In elementary school, students learn the basics of wellness, such as appropriate hand washing, how to brush one’s teeth and how to dress appropriately for the weather. In middle school, students learn about various factors that impact one’s health, such as the environment, heredity and personal lifestyle habits.

Chalk Talk: Why STEM Education Is So Important
Workers across the country, whether they are in white or blue-collar jobs, find themselves increasingly in need of backgrounds in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Jobs with STEM-related skills are becoming a larger part of the available job market, with projected growth of over 20 percent in the next five years alone. With the country continuing to recover from the Great Recession and jobless rates hovering around 7 percent nationally, the growth of STEM-related occupations can provide the workforce with a much-needed boost. All kinds of occupations require STEM skills, from laboratory scientist to auto mechanic to math teacher, making it an attractive option for students as well as adults who seek to change careers. And STEM-related occupations pay well – eight of the top ten college majors in terms of income are in STEM fields.
