Chalk Talk: The Role of an Elementary Reading Specialist

Elementary school is the starting point in a student’s academic career and the Reading Specialist plays a vital role during this crucial time. Reading Specialists not only work with students, but work with the teachers as well. Small groups of students who may be having difficulty will meet with a Reading Specialist to work on skills they are lacking in. The benefit of this is that the students get a smaller group size and a more individualized lesson. Reading Specialists also meet with teachers to help plan lessons, demonstrate lessons, and help administer benchmark tests. The goal of this collaboration is to make sure all students are receiving quality reading instruction no matter what teacher he or she has. Finally, a Reading Specialist is also there as a resource for parents who may have questions or concerns about their childs' reading ability.
