Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bloomfield Township District Curriculum

Students in elementary schools are exposed to the Spanish language at a young age which provides an early look into foreign languages. Schools use ‘Everyday Mathematics’ which spirals the math curriculum to allow students to practice skills throughout elementary school. Middle school students have opportunities to join traveling classrooms, join International Baccalaureate programs, or study in a team taught atmosphere. The traveling classrooms allow students to take what they have learned and apply it to the real world with frequent field trips and excursions.

Bloomfield Township high schools boast high achievements due to a challenging curriculum that includes AP classes, IB programs, and extensive electives. Students in Birmingham Public Schools are able to extend their studies in fully functioning engineering and robotics labs. There are also facilities for culinary and computer electives available to students who would like to pursue careers in those fields. Athletics and extracurricular clubs are also offered to students in addition to academic electives.

Chalk Talk: The Role of an Elementary Reading Specialist

Elementary school is the starting point in a student’s academic career and the Reading Specialist plays a vital role during this crucial time. Reading Specialists not only work with students, but work with the teachers as well. Small groups of students who may be having difficulty will meet with a Reading Specialist to work on skills they are lacking in. The benefit of this is that the students get a smaller group size and a more individualized lesson. Reading Specialists also meet with teachers to help plan lessons, demonstrate lessons, and help administer benchmark tests. The goal of this collaboration is to make sure all students are receiving quality reading instruction no matter what teacher he or she has. Finally, a Reading Specialist is also there as a resource for parents who may have questions or concerns about their childs' reading ability.
