Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Box Elder District Curriculum

The early year’s goals for students are to develop the awareness of words, meanings, text types and communication styles. In Math, students learn different ways to solve problems and manipulate data so they understand the language and concepts of math. Science instruction offers young students plenty of opportunities to experiment and become familiar with scientific concepts which they will be more deeply introduced to in high school.

In the K-12 curriculum, the core subjects of Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies, and Science are taught according to the South Dakota State Standards. These courses are instructed on a multitude of levels to meet the needs for all learners, and become more specialized in the form of electives for upper-grade students. Advanced Placement courses, Honor’s courses, and Dual Enrollment, along with Gifted Education, allow the student to go as high as they can in their learning goals.

  • Unity Day - An awesome Unity Day was celebrated by Francis Case Elementary School. The students at the school were encouraged to wear tie dyed shirts. All day long, activities were done to promote being drug free and being unified to support each other as friends. This is a project that is done every year, and Francis Case celebrated Unity Day with tie dye T-shirts. We created a rainbow of colors and unity in the gymnasium. Since this has been done every year, many community members are aware of these tie dye shirts and know that they represent Francis Case Elementary School.

Chalk Talk: Social Teaching for Children

Special Days, such as days given by the school for Spirit Week, or Drug Free Week, or Unity Day help the children in the social and emotional aspect of development, in addition to being fun for them! Usually during the school day, the students do the same thing: go from class to class or subject to subject in the classrooms. On special days, the children are given that chance to relax and get to know other people they would not normally get to talk to. This can lead to life-long friendships which are so very cherished!
