Brookhaven District and Curriculum
The DeKalb County School District follows state provided and Common Core Standards to ensure all students achieve proficiency in their academic subjects. Students should be able to read and understand various elements of written works such as: Structural Elements, Aesthetic Elements, and Cohesiveness. By grades 6-8, students not only refine the skills learned in earlier grades they begin comprehending more difficult subject matter and begin analyzing its meaning. They also learn to apply literary elements in their own writing to improve meaning, tone, and clarity. In grades 9-12 students work on writing and comprehension skills and learn to write personal stories and letters as well as to construct research papers in both MLA and APA format.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookhaven District Curriculum
Brookhaven Schools are part of the DeKalb County School System. DeKalb County Schools have made a commitment to the development of a system wide curriculum structure that aims at promoting high expectations for its teachers as well as its students and will result in more meaningful student learning experiences and skill development. This curriculum would be best described as a thought provoking curriculum, meaning that it is designed to integrate content and skill process, while exemplifying real world situations that students will face in their daily lives.
The K-12 curriculum is designed to ensure that all students will learn the same core content at specifically designated instructional levels, regardless of what teacher they have, or what school they attend. The curriculum is academically rich, and focuses on the best interests of the students while being culturally diverse. Students are encouraged to develop strong communication skills within this environment.

- Career and Tech Awards - Nearly 40 students competed and placed in the top-10 at this year's national Career Technical and Agricultural Education event. Through the help of their dedicated teachers and school staff these students who have dedicated themselves and their free time to developing well thought out projects in various career and technical education areas were rewarded for their time and hard work by placing in the top ten in several areas of competition among those areas were robotics, healthcare, family and consumer science, and agriculture.
- Major SAT Improvement - The DeKalb County School District showed a nine point gain in SAT scores in 2012. The District had major improvement across the entire school district. This holds especially true for the African American and Hispanic student populations in the areas of mathematics and writing skills scores. Across the district graduating seniors earned an average combined score of 1343 in the areas of critical reading, writing, and mathematics. This nine point gain was nearly double the statewide average. These gains show that if the district continues to focus on educating the children and implementing new curriculum that the school will continually achieve these results.
- Exemplary Performing School - Kittredge Magnet School was one of only eight schools in Georgia to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School. This school also made the U.S. Department of Education's list of Exemplary High Performing Schools. National Blue Ribbon Schools are schools that are committed to rapidly advancing student achievement while thoroughly preparing students for future success in either college endeavors or careers. Schools are classified as Exemplary High Performing, signifying that they are among their state's best academically performing schools. The other category that they can be recognized for is Exemplary Improving Schools by improving overall academic performance.
