Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookhaven District Curriculum

Elementary students embark on an exciting learning experience which incorporates hands on activities, so important at younger ages, with learning. They learn how to read and write proficiently. They also learn about numbers and math. Elementary students are introduced to technology and explore why it is useful today. They learn basic science and history while learning to interact socially.

During middle school, a shift to more complex work and the development of analytic abilities in each course becomes the focus. Students encounter both fiction and non-fiction reading in their Language Arts classes to prepare them for different types of literacies, such as financial or scientific literacy, they will be required to develop. Students are encouraged to work hard and take advanced classes where possible to assist in their high school to college transition. To this end, a variety of arts, technology, academic and community extracurriculars are available to the students.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Preparing for Tests

Preparing for a test or exam can be difficult and intimidating. Preparing for it, though not always the most pleasant or fun activity, can be helpful. Being well prepared and well rested for a test can help you not only succeed on an individual exam, but help you on future tests that may refer to earlier studied material. When you come prepared to a test, it is easier not to be so nervous about the exam. When you are stressed out, it is often even more difficult to remember information you know, so coming in prepared and confident can help you even if just by that one benefit. Students who study for tests also often have a better grade in classes than if they had not studied. These and other benefits are among those which result from coming into a test or exam well prepared.
