Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookline District Curriculum

The Brookline Public School follows the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework. The district's core values include: high achievement for all, excellence in teaching, collaboration, respect for human difference and education equality. The core curriculum builds skills and knowledge yearly so that students master fundamentals which they later learn a range of ways to apply in real world and theoretical settings. Curriculum Coordinators have developed curriculum district overview available at each grade level to ensure that all students are reaching the same standards for learning.

Assessments implemented in the district are developed by Brookline Public School educators. Students are assessed with formal and informal assessment in the classroom throughout the school year. Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessments are given in each school to assess the academic progress of students in core subject areas. The district is assessed and rated through these measures on the District Report Card.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Social Development

Parents must be concerned about the academic, social and emotional development of their learner. Academic success is important, but the emotional and social development of a student is just as important. Students must be able to manage their emotions in this ever-changing society. Educational institutions aspire to prepare students to succeed academically. Standardized test assess the core content knowledge that learners obtain. Students must successfully manage stress, disappointment and rejection. Self-confidence must be projected in the boardroom as well as content knowledge. Self-awareness and self-esteem are just as important as accelerated academic knowledge.
