Chalk Talk: Nurturing the Love of Pets

Can having a pet teach or help us in any way? Pets are more than companions and someone we take for walks and clean up after. Children learn to acknowledge and respect animals' rights and their own responsibilities in caring for pets. Pets teach us to trust, to have confidence in our instincts and in those of animals and to appreciate animals to be on a higher hierarchy or chain of being than humans. We see pets helping the blind and taking care of the owner while using their finely tuned instincts to save the people they care about from hazards. Pets require a lot of work, commitment, and a complete change in priorities, as well as grocery foods and cleaning supplies. Many owners swear that they could never do without their pets. Parents need to encourage children who need friends and find themselves lonely at times to spend time with their favorite pet that they are connected to-- whether it be a bird, a goldfish or a turtle. Pets are forever our friends and expect nothing--only love and friendship in return!
