Buckingham District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Teaching and learning in Buckingham follows a plan laid out in the curriculum designed by the province. The curriculum describes the expectations for learning in the core subjects in elementary and secondary schools. These expectations represent the standards of learning that propel successful learning. For specialized programs like intercultural and religious education, or adult and continuing education programs, there are specific curriculum designed to cover the learning in these programs. These curricula also describe what students will come to understand during their courses. These curriculum are often designed with input from professionals which help to prepare students not just for their future academic pursuits but also for their future professional goals.

We currently cover the following Buckingham-area school districts: Western Quebec School Board and Commission Scolaire au Cœur-des-Vallées.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Buckingham District Curriculum

The core curriculum focuses on developing key skills in students so they are able to read analytically, understand how to solve various types of math problems, and are able to investigate scientific phenomenon. Students also study history and current events, develop an awareness of different cultures, and can become bilingual and biliterate in language courses. Each curriculum framework details the goals for students learning so they are continually progressing towards the advanced work in high school which promotes the higher order thinking skills in each subject.

Through the arts curriculum, students investigate various characters in depth, looking for psychological, social, and physical characteristics that give them depth and dimension. Using this information, students develop their own approach to bringing a character to life. Working with other learners, theatre students develop an understanding of how to put on a production, from writing scripts to creating costuming and scenery to delivering lines in an effective manner.

Chalk Talk: Preventing Cheating

When a teen enters middle or high school they often feel pressure to cheat. To help the teen parents need to make sure that the child realizes that the progress they do in school is more important than how their neighbor does. Parents need to be aware of their pattern of behavior when a child brings home grades. It is better not to punish a child for a poor grade, instead point out the advancement that the child and the ideas they have come away with. Parents can also open a conversation with the teen to see what pressure they may be feeling so that they will feel more willing to come and talk with the parent in the future. Finally, parents need to make sure they are setting a good example for the child. Parents remain a role model for the child, even in high school, so if a teen sees a parent cheat or take a short-cut to a solution, they will see this behavior is being accepted.
